Not sure how to use your DALL·E 2? Perhaps the most famous of the latest AI art generators, the DALL·E 2, allows anyone to generate an image of almost anything just by writing a text description. At least that’s the theory, but the platform has some quirks.
First launched in February 2022, Dahl-E attracted immediate astonishment due to the apparent accuracy and realism of the images it could create from text prompts. Access was initially via a waitlist, but the tool, while still in beta, is now generally available to the public.
Like all AI art generators, the tool remains controversial due to concerns about potential misuse, possible impact on creative work, and disregard for the copyright of images used to train models. Those concerns aside, many artists and designers are busy figuring out how to make this new technology work for them.
How to use Dahl E 2? Well, in theory, you go to the website, create an account, and you can generate an image of anything you can by typing in a text prompt. However, there are a few things to keep in mind. Below, we’ll walk through how to access the DALL·E 2 and how to use the DALL·E 2, including some tips on how to make your DALL·E 2 images better.
How to use DALL·E 2
Dahl E 2 is a browser-based tool (it also provides an API that developers can use in their own applications). To use DALL-E 2 directly, first, you need to create an account. It’s a quick process, and once you’ve confirmed your email or phone number, you can use the tool right away. Everyone gets 50 free credits, which is enough to explore how the tool works. You also get another 15 free credits each month, but they don’t go very far, so you’ll end up buying more if you want to use the tool on a regular basis (more on pricing below).
After completing the DALL-E 2 registration to open an account, you can use the program in your browser (opens in a new tab) on the DALL-E 2 website. It’s fairly intuitive at first. Type a description of what you want in the text box, such as “Astronaut riding a horse in impressionist style”. Click “Generate” and DALL·E will try to create four 1024×1024 images representing what you wrote.
You may need to adjust the tips to get the results you like. When you have an image you are happy with, click on the one you like. On the next screen, you can download the image (click the arrow in the upper right corner of the image). You can also edit the image (click “Edit”; this gives you tools like an eraser and the option to upload the image to add to the AI creation or add more squares to expand the image). You can also create “variants” of the image – the DALL-E 2 will create 4 alternate versions of the image you create.
Tips on How to Write DALL-E 2
It sounds simple, and it is. But getting good results can be tricky. Tip Short details tend to be arbitrary, so it makes sense to try to make the most of the 400 characters at your disposal. Usually, it looks like the more detail the better. For example, if your goal is to create realistic images, it would be helpful to include the model of your camera, the focal length of your lens, and the type of lighting (think “studio lighting,” “soft lighting,” “deep shadows,” etc.).
Before you get used to how much detail you need to include in your instructions, you’ll often find that you need to edit the prompt and try again after getting the first result. In the first set of images of the groundhog skiing above, the groundhog looks a bit scared. Maybe, I want him to look like he’s enjoying himself, so I need to change that by editing the hint. I could add “smile”. Now he looks happier…sort of. . . in some options. Be careful, because each new generation will cost you a credit.
How to use other functions of DALL·E 2
Another way to use the DALL-E 2 is to upload images from your phone or computer. You’ll find a link below the prompt field, click Upload Image. The image will be cropped to a square. After uploading the image you want to use, you can let the DALL-E 2 create your own variations of the image, or you can edit the image. In the example below, I upload a photo of a girl riding a bicycle past a man with an umbrella. With no further input, the DALL-E 2 produced some interesting variations, including combining the two themes to show someone riding a bicycle with an umbrella.
How to Boost Dahl E 2 Image
Dahl E 2 will give you the results you want the first time. You may need to edit the image by writing new hints for specific elements in the image. There are still some things in DALL·E 2.
There can be unwanted artifacts in images, and like all AI art generators, the DALL E 2 can struggle with faces and bodies. Improvements on the DALL·E 2 You may need to export them and then edit them in more traditional image editing software such as Photoshop. For example, you can use Photoshop’s Neural Filter to fix wobbly eyes.
The Dal E 2 also has a limitation on resolution, which means it won’t be possible to create an image large enough to print at a large size, but you may be able to successfully enlarge the image in another program. For more frequently asked questions about DALL, see E 2 below.
How can I make my DALL·E 2 image better?
DALL-E 2 has a hard time handling requests for multiple body images, so keep it on one body if possible. This can be limiting, but if you want to create images with multiple subjects, you can try creating separate images and then editing them together.
