Facebook ad system bug left many accounts severely overspending

by

Many Facebook advertisers woke up Sunday morning in shock when a bug in Meta’s ad delivery system caused a series of accounts to be severely overspended .

Meta ads bug

Some ad buyers reported CPM increases of 200%-500% from the previous day, while all ad performance metrics appeared to be impacted. Other advertisers also said their ad sets far exceeded their daily set budgets and were unable to limit the damage.

Meta acknowledged the issue within hours of receiving the report and quickly implemented a fix, while also assuring advertising partners that credits would be issued to rectify the situation.

As of 9:45 PM ET, Meta has reportedly fixed the issue and all ad systems are functioning normally again. Meta said it will communicate directly with the affected ad account managers in the coming days.

This is a major mistake for the platform, which has struggled to increase trust and reliance on its advertising products following Apple’s iOS 14 update. With many users opting out of data tracking, Meta had to retool its ad-serving process around machine learning and improve the detection of the best audience for each campaign.

Those efforts have paid off, but issues like this will make ad buyers more wary of Meta’s system and could prompt ad spending to shrink.

These effects are likely not to last. But in essence, it’s another headache Meta doesn’t need as it struggles to overhaul its ad system in line with the new requirements.

It’s worth checking your Facebook ad group and making sure you don’t end up overspending over the weekend.

We will update this post if/when we hear back from Meta regarding potential corrective steps.
